  To be reviewed again, apparently this is now under new management, and friends say it's good, so I'm going to give it a try out in October. Watch this space...
  
  Well, as promised, went there and we had lunch today and tried the Grotto House and American Burgers and chips. They were nothing special and not recommendable.
  
  Staff were pleasant and friendly, and the food was well cooked and took a short while to serve us, hence the improved 2-star rating, just a pity the food quality isn't up to it.
  
  It's also cash only, no debit/credit cards.

  This is an iconic location right on the beach at the foot of the magnificent 100' cliffs of Marsden Beach. It was a favourite bar and restaurant of mine 15 years ago but sadly it's not even a shadow of what it was. Just needs a good change out and some marketing and it could be ranked along with the best dining destinations in the North East.

  It has had a troubled past, with ownership changing hands, and it reopening and closing, however it had always been one of my favourite bars in South Shields owing to its unique location - built into the cliff overlooking Marsden beach and the infamous Marsden Rock. Ever since it's facelift and refurbishment in recent it looks even better than ever. I highly recommend you come for a drink and stay for the unique atmosphere. Their food is rather good, too!

  Restaurant in a cave. Historic surroundings. Worth the visit whether you take the lift into the cave or feel the fresh air down the stairs. Beach walks both directions.
